Beanworld Book1: Wahoolazuma!

Review by Aziz Bawany

Writer & Artist: Larry Marder
Published by Dark Horse Comics

Beanworld is a story that follows a tribe of small beans as they explore life, its meanings, and everything beyond the obvious.

Larry Marder's black and white series from the '80s is collected by Dark Horse into three snazzy hardcovers, each providing a dearth of comic book brilliance. With Volume 1, we learn the ecosystem and anthropological setup of these small beans. It all begins with a single sprout-butt distributed by Gran'Ma'Pa, the giving tree.

At the end of “Annihilation: Conquest” I fell in love with Peter Quill’s rag-tag team of heroes. How could you go wrong with a talking raccoon on a space team? Since I missed the boat on their ongoing series I thought it would be convenient to catch up with the trades. I was hoping to see if the same kind of dialogue and chemistry would endure beyond the mini-series and translate well into an ongoing book. Here’s what I found…

Wildstorm: After the Fall

Review by Joe David Soliz (a.k.a. grifter78)

Writers: Christos Gage & Russell Uttley
Artists: Trevor Hairsine, Ivan Reis, Mike McCone, Pete Woods, Phil Noto, Chris Sprouse, John Paul Leon, & Ben Oliver.

(No Spoilers)

The World’s End back-up stories are finally collected here for those who did not follow all of the World’s End books during the storyline’s first year.  There are 11 stories total with stories 1-8 being 4-part stories and stories 9-11 being 2-part stories.  The theme of the backup stories I think can best be summed up in one word: ‘return’.  Several long dormant Wildstorm characters/teams were featured in these stories, the most prevalent being the return of Team 7 to the Wildstorm Universe.  Some stories were really good, some were ok, and some weren’t very good.  So to better serve each story, I’ll review them individually.

Dark Entries

Review by Aziz Bawany

Writer: Ian Rankin
Artist: Werther Dell’edera
Letterer: Clem Robins
Editor: Will Dennis
Published by Vertigo Crime

... instead of making the book market come to us the Vertigo Crime line tailors to the customers who are looking for one thing: great crime fiction. With names like Max Allan Collins, Ian Rankin, Brian Azzarello and others coming into the fray you can bet that Vertigo is starting to see the importance of the graphic novel customer as their primary business.  They are doing their best to get the book onto the crime fiction shelf rather than being relegated to the graphic novel section and its obscurity.

But what’s the story like you ask? Well it’s a John Constantine story that does very little in terms of the character and boy do I love it.
