Dawn: Not like these. Now she's faster than a speeding--Oh, jeez, I just realized what they were doing. Losers.
Okay I have a confession. Right now I should be well into a writing a review or two for one of the big two events going on at the big two companies. However after reading this issue of Buffy The Vampire Slayer I just had to say something and hope that my voice is heard.
This book is nothing but fun! This issue is truly written for the comic book fan, with all kinds of references for new and older readers. It answers the one essential truth for every comic fan. What would you do if you suddenly end up getting super powers? Would you race a speeding bullet? Lift a locomotive? Try to pop claws from you fists? How about trying to phase through a solid object? Well Xander has Buffy run a battery of tests that will have most comic fans chuckling. Even the cover gives homage to a famous first appearance.
Okay enough gloating. In this issue of Buffy the team realizes that they are missing some close friends in the wake of war while Buffy explores the limits of her new abilities. Since I am a late reader in to this series, as in last issue was my first, it is interesting to see how some characters have changed. Enemies are friends, former rats are enemies, and people who were skinless and dead are now alive and skinless. Brad Meltzer seems to have a firm grip on the characters and a cool concept to make this book work. While I know very little of Buffy's new nemesis Twilight they seem to have been playing a large chess match of cat and mouse. From what I can tell the slayers have taken a large number of casualties but Twilight does not seem to be out of tricks. Georges Jeanty brings his familiar style to the series while still making the characters look like their television selves. It makes me want to go back and read his other past titles such as Marvel's Weapon X.
I am extremely pleased with this book and moments like this makes me want to go pop in a DVD and re-watch some of my favorite moments. Unfortunately I have more reviews to write...and miles to go before I sleep.
Overall Rating 9 out of 10 (Excellent!)
